My thoughts on today's video and movie business

Let me start by saying that I love movies.  I will save the reasons why for another time.  I will discuss their relevance in my walk with God at a later time.  Right now I want to talk about how much movies SUCK as of late.  I worked at a video store for seven months.  During that time, I watched maybe 10 new releases that I was pleased with and didn't regret watching, even though they were free.  I have come to a simple conclusion.

The studios have finally realized that people will pay for and watch just about anything.  I came to this conclusion after seeing videos like Charlie's Angels, The Way of The Gun, Mission Impossible 2, Bring it On, Coyote Ugly, and countless other pieces of crap fly of the shelves.  Don't even get me started on the hundreds of straight to video titles that make millions of dollars.  People, there is a reason why it is a straight to video release.  Maybe the only exceptions are some independent titles.

The theaters are even worse.  People will go see a movie just because it is on the box office list.  A majority people purchase tickets to these movies without even bothering to find out what it's about, let alone who is in it or who is directing.  I asked 10 people in line to see "The Mexican" if they had any idea what the movie was about, and nearly all responded, "I have no clue, but it's the number one movie in America right now so it must be good."  PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!  It is because of this that the overall quality of movies has gone down in leaps and bounds.  Sure there is the occasional incredible movie, but they are fewer and far between.

The movies that are being passed of as quality movies, for the most part, stink.  I liked Gladiator.  It was action packed and had a story to boot, but Best Picture?  Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ran circles around this movie in every category.  I swear if I hear another person say "I don't want to pay to read.  How are you supposed to watch a movie and read?" I am going to scream.  You can chew gum and walk can't you?  The movie is so incredible, you honestly forget that it is subtitled.  I am not kidding.

The business of Hollywood is killing what I love.  Many have said it before me.  It is sad.  I am begging you people, use discernment in your movie choices.  Think for yourselves.  If all of us decided not to watch an obviously terrible movie and we didn't all just watch whatever we were told to by advertising and the box office, then the studios would be forced to think for once and make more quality product.  Where is their motivation when you will see anything they toss out at you?  "But what else will I do, Brendan?" Get off your butt and do something productive for once, fly a kite, I don't care.  But don't give in.
